Thai birth certificate

From the couch of Chris...

One of the "different" things about having a child in Asia is that her birth certificate is printed in Thai instead of English! Before we could apply for her passport, we had to get the birth certificate translated into English, so we paid the hospital to do it for us. Apparently they got her birthday wrong on the first translation, so it ended up taking about 2 weeks to get a finished copy. When we reviewed the English translation we found all kinds of fun information that you wouldn't find on an American birth certificate. Here's a breakdown of the best ones!

- Nationality: Not acquired. That's right, for the first month of her life, Emerson was a girl without a country! We debated whether that meant she could represent any country in the Olympics, or if she wouldn't be able to compete at all. After much debate, we decided we better apply for citizenship. More on that in a future blog!

- Date of Birth: 27th December 2555. Our daughter is a time traveler from the future! Either that, or they're using the lunar calendar... but I'm sticking with option A.

- 14th waxing moon, 1st lunar month, in the year of the "small snake": Ummmm... what???

We'll have a lot of fun with this later on in her life when people ask for a copy of our child's birth certificate :)
