A few weeks ago a new friend of ours, Peter, wanted to take us to a friend's house to make dumplings on Saturday afternoon. We thought that if we ever wanted to learn to make dumplings, what better way to learn than from a mother in China?! And so our journey began...
We went to their home in the countryside. Keep in mind, the countryside in China is NOT like the countryside in America. There are no rolling hills, no "amber fields of grain." There are dilapidated buildings, seemingly like the remnants of a war. Only that these buildings are people's homes. Mary is Peter's friend, and she takes us into her home where we meet her mother and grandparents. I am always amazed at how willing people in China are to open their homes to complete strangers-- a humbling lesson I hope to never forget.
This is James, one of the guys I play basketball with.
This is Victor, one of the most inquisitive students I've ever met. For example, he's not even one of my students, but he still comes to my office hours-- he always has questions to ask. That pretty much sums up Victor.
This is what you wrap the dumplings in.
This is how you make the dumplings! The filling is some mixture of pork and vegetables.
Most people like to boil the dumplings. Allie and I typically fry them instead. What can I say-- we're from the South!
The final product. Delicious!
All in all, it was a pretty great day! Even though we are horrible at making dumplings and they all fell apart, we got to spend time with some new friends, doing something we've never done before. And this time around I didn't even get food poisoning!
