We are here! After a long day of travelling, some unexpected baggage fees (we were allowed to pack about 1/2 of what we actually packed for our journey), and a lovely experience trying to take compression stockings off underneath my skinny jeans mid-flight (by lovely, I mean awkward), we arrived in Bangkok. We got in about 6 hours ahead of my college roommate, Megan, who came to visit. Apparently she likes us enough to be okay hanging out with a hugely pregnant lady in a foreign country :)
Not only was it wonderful to see her face, it was good motivation to get out and about and do some fun stuff instead of vegging out in the hotel room watching second rate tv shows on our TV.
So first, we took a Thai cooking class. Chris and I took one in Chiang Mai last year but we were excited to learn some more and it truly is a delicious meal. Our instructor's name was Jay and he wore rose colored glasses the whole time. Maybe they were prescription?
He was born in Thailand but lived in San Francisco for like 20 years. He was am-ah-zing. He made up nicknames for everyone and while slightly racist, I did have to laugh when he kept referring to the Korean couple as 'Gagnam Style.' He called us Team America. He kept us entertained all day long with his witticisms and tasty cooking. Here's Megan with her basket at the market.
After the market we headed back to our cooking school to learn. No, these are not our Thai chef hats, although that would have been fun.
First dish, of course, Pad Thai. We each had a prepared tray of ingredients and he told us to put them in the wok. Megan hates bean sprouts and tried to avoid putting them in her noodles but Jay was having none of it.
It still turned out delicious.
Team 'merica Pad Thai
We had a blast. I highly recommend it. Jay had to leave while we were still eating but we took a picture with him before he went to his hip hop dancing class. Yup, we're kindred spirits.
